History:

(This history is based on the 'bad' ending of Suikoden 2, and contains massive spoilers. I have whited it out after the beginning to avoid ruining people on the game too much, but I'd suggest reading if you don't intend to play the game since all of the information under there is important character development for Jowy. I am SO SORRY FOR THE LENGTH OH SHIT. This is AFTER I shortened it, too. D:)

Jowy was born in IS 444 into a wealthy household. He was not an Atreides by birth, being the result of a previous relation his mother, Rosa, had before marrying Marcel Atreides; there were rumours that his father was Alec Wisemail, but these remain unconfirmed. For this reason, his family were emotionally distant towards him; Jowy, finding no feeling of love or caring in the household, instead grew close to two children in his neighborhood. Adopted by the old hero Genkaku, they were Riou and Nanami. Riou particularly was very close to Jowy, and two of them became inseperable as kids; whether training to fight with Genkaku, playing pranks on Nanami, or spying on Jillia, they did absolutely everything together. As they grew older, the two of them decided to join the Highland Youth Brigade.

In IS 460, the Brigade was assigned to Tenzan Pass by Captain Rowd; by incidence, Riou and Jowy escaped the terrible massacre of the whole of their brigade by the tyrannical Luca Blight, Prince of the Highland. It was a set-up designed to provoke war between the Highland and the City-State of Jowston, which Luca Blight blamed the attack on. Both boys overheard the whole conspiracy, but were discovered by Captain Rowd who attempted to have them killed. They ran from the attackers until they reached a waterfall and a dead end; there, they made a pact to find each other and slashed two marks into the rock face, before leaping down into the waterfall.

They were seperated, but eventually reunited. With the help of Flik and Victor, mercenaries of the City-State, they decided to fight the Highland Army and created their own alliance against it. Jowy befriended a little girl called Pilika, and after her town was destroyed and her parents killed, he took her in.

The little girl showed Riou and Jowy a cave; once inside, the two boys became seperated, and Jowy experienced visions of his childhood with Riou. Both boys were then granted the power of half of the fragmented Rune of Beginning by the mysterious goddess Leknaat. Jowy received the Black Sword Rune, which granted him powerful offensive magic. Riou received the Bright Shield Rune, a mix of some powerful attacks and strong healing defenses.

Jowy, perhaps confident with this newfound power to protect the ones he loved, told Riou he wanted to fight for Pilika's sake. He volunteered to spy on Highland, and Riou accompanied him. They spotted Rowd during the mission and hid in Jillia's tent; the Princess proved surprisingly cooperative, helping them avoid capture when Rowd wished to check her tent. However, they were nevertheless eventually spotted. Jowy stalled them with the rune, and Riou escaped to rejoin Nanami.

Jowy met with Luca Blight, and though he resented the man and his heinous actions, he admired his power, and was seduced into complying with Highland. However, he had an underlying plan against Luca Blight, intending to use the Highland Army to fulfil his own needs. He accepted the offer to assassinate the Mayor of Muse, and returned to join Riou and Nanami.

During the next day he joined the Jowston Hill meeting and was disgusted by the squabbling of the mayors of the City-State. He realised the State couldn't manage Highland if they conquered it, as they could already barely agree on one thing. Later in the day, he fulfilled his mission and killed Lady Annabelle. Riou and Nanami entered and were horrified by Jowy's actions; they spoke briefly, but Jowy was cryptic and limited, riddled with guilt for what he'd just done but unwilling to stop now that the plan was in action. He fled, leaving his two friends to be blamed for the murder and become enemies of the City-State.

Having won Luca's trust with the murder of Lady Annabelle and a consequential assault on Greenhill, Jowy requested Jillia's hand in marriage, saying it would ensure the throne for Luca. Luca accepted, and King Agares was assassinated.

However, Jowy was secretly plotting the death of Luca. He informed Riou of Luca's movements and the Dunan Army, led by Riou, made a counterstrategy to kill Luca. It succeeded and now Jillia was the blood heir, making Jowy the King of Highland. Remembering the squabbles of the City-State, Jowy didn't yield and make peace with Riou but demanded that he surrender. Riou refused to back down and they continued to war.

Riou began to reclaim territories, overcoming Jowy little by little. Jowy briefly met Riou face to face, during which they realised that though they didn't want to fight, they couldn't betray the faith of the people invested in them. It was fate, as the two halves of Rune of Beginning were always destined to battle each other.

During Riou's Matilda campaign, Jowy revealed himself to Riou and Nanami. They were interrupted by Gorudo, who wished to kill both Riou and Jowy and take all the land as his own. Nanami deflected the arrows, but the last critically injured her. Riou and Jowy killed Gorudo, and Jowy ordered his troops out of Matilda, and then out of Muse, bringing them all back to Highland. He attempted to bolster morale by pretending to sacrifice Jillia to the terrible Beast Rune, but the Highland forces fell. Seed and Culgan, Jowy's closest allies within the Highland Army, were killed. Jillia and Pilika were sent to Harmonia to have a new life, and Jowy abandoned L'Renouille Palace.

Jowy returned to Tenzan Pass one last time, where it all began. Riou met him there, and Jowy decided that the two of them must fight, and one had to kill the other. Riou refused to fight, but there was no escaping his fate; Jowy's Rune, designed as it was to slowly deplete the power of its user, drained him at last, and he died there at Riou's feet.

The next thing he knew, he was on one of the silver ships.

Personality: Jowy is an ass Jowy is a thoughtful, intelligent, soft-spoken young man, though he sounds incredibly old for his years. He has strong opinions and a wise strategic sense, but feels very much that the ends justify the means, and that some deaths are necessary to achieve peace.

His decisions are often effective in finding a realistic outcome, but radical in how it would be achieved, and he will not step down to avoid being hurtful or ruthless. His actions often torment him, however; he is, in a sense, a martyr for his ideals, and will surrender all happiness and make endless sacrifices to achieve what he feels to be the only solution.

Though he was once fun-loving, optimistic and passionate, the war has made him resigned, cold and docile. It's apparent that somewhere along the way he lost his ability to be a child and to hope for happiness. Though he may view Arcadia as a second chance, it's doubtful he will ever stop thinking of his best friends, Riou and Nanami, and will be hoping that they are still safe on their world. He can do nothing but pray that all that bloodshed and hardship was worth something.

Jowy is 5'9"-5'10" tall, has grey eyes and blond hair wrapped back into a tight ponytail. It's cut straight at the bottom, and ends at his waist. He's somewhat muscular, but still very boyish.

Abilities:

Black Sword Rune
Half of the Rune of Beginning. It symbolizes attacking in a conflict.
Flash Judgement - 120dmg vs. 1 enemy. (9 uses, mild attack power)
Twinkling Blade - 100dmg vs. all enemies. 30% chance of death. (7 uses, moderate attack power)
Piercing One - 700dmg vs. 1 enemy. (4 uses, moderate-to-high attack power. Using all four in a day significantly drains Jowy's energy.)
Hungry Fiend - 1200dmg vs. all enemies. (2 uses, can only use twice per day, extremely high attack power. Using more than one in a day significantly drains Jowy's energy.)

Wielder of the Black Sword Rune, a rune with powerful offensive magic. However, it's unlikely to be half as powerful as it should be, as it's been seperated from the Bright Shield Rune and from Leknaat. He is also incredibly skilled with his weapon, the Heavenly Star Staff, and can also use a sword. Now that he is no longer with the Highland though, he is likely to prefer the former.
He is logical-minded and persistent, and this may also aid him in Arcadia.
